In any wealthy, advanced, industrialized country, I think that Healthcare, education, some basic level of housing, and even a job should be considered basic human rights. Available to everyone regardless of citizenship, social class, etc. We should have adopted Roosevelt's proposed 2nd bill of rights ages ago.
Furthermore, a human being cannot, ever, be "illegal." Everyone deserves respect. Everyone deserves a chance.
Both parties are centrist for the most part. The dems are center-left, and the reps are center-right. I've always thought of myself as a left winger, even before getting interested in politics. I'm definitely farther to the left than the dems, but on the other hand I'm kind of limited government guy. Anyway, at my core I support a society run by the working class, so these days I typically consider myself a democratic libertarian socialist.
That uhhh, pretty much sums up my political leanings.
